Below Deck with Tres
On the Ferry from Sorong to Waisai Island
Previous
Next
Tres Egmond is the captain of the Fajar Indah ferry
Tres has 30 years experience working at sea
The crew spend up to 12 hours a day on the boat
The ferry is a 'slow boat' and takes 3-4 hours to make the 75km journey
The old engine needs constant maintenance and delays are common
Tres used to captain fishing boats until 2006 when the Japanese company closed down due to over-fishing of the area
Now his main passengers are locals commuting for work and, increasingly, tourists interested in the islands' marine life
Tres checks his hair in the mirror before his interview
Tres gets wired for sound before his interview
